Morrissey Blames Kate Middleton for Nurse's Suicide

If Morrissey were a lesser artist, his reputation for inflammatory and controversial statements would have overshadowed his career by now. The former Smiths singer has always taken a rather militant stance on the causes he holds dear (the man did write a song called "Meat Is Murder," after all). These days, he's railing against the British monarchy, this week tellingNew Zealand's 3New that Kate Middleton is to blame for a nurse's suicide earlier this month.

Jacintha Saldana took her own life after she was tricked into helping a pair of Australian DJs secure details about the Duchess of Cambridge's stay at London's King Edward VII Hospital. Morrissey says the DJs, who claim the entire incident was just a harmless joke, are not at fault: "It wasn't because of two DJs in Australia that this woman took her own life — it was the pressure around her."

Morrissey believes that the Duchess' hospital stay was "for absolutely no reason," and accused her of feeling "no shame" about Saldanha's death. "She's saying nothing about the death of this poor woman," Morrissey stated. "The arrogance of the British royals is absolutely staggering

The performer questioned whether it was hyperemesis gravidarum or an eating disorder that had Middleton in the hospital. "Does she have a health condition?" he asked. "Is it anorexia or is it pregnancy? I mean morning sickness already? So much hoo haw and then suddenly as bright as a button as soon as this poor woman dies she's out of the hospital? It doesn't ring true."

This is not the first time Morrissey has made anti-monarchy statements. In October, he told Stephen Colbert, "I hate the royals. I think they're absolutely horrible people. I think they're arrogant, horrible dictators. The world does not need them."
